Two weeks in Hokkaido, with time on your side

Over fifteen days the trip finds its own pace. A clear day after a heavy snowfall can go to a long outing in the trees; another morning can start slowly at the onsen. We build the stages with you, from the moment you land at New Chitose to your flight home, so the big powder days and the gentler ones both have their place.

In Niseko you stay at a ryokan with an onsen fed by the hot springs, with the four areas of Niseko United around you and Rusutsu and Kiroro within reach when they have had the most snow. When the weather allows, Mount Yotei, 1,898 m, is there to climb on skins.

Otaru: the port, the canal and the town

Otaru gives the trip its stage by the sea: a port town on the Sea of Japan, where your hotel faces the marina. You ski Teine or Kokusai above Ishikari Bay, and in the evening you are back in town.

Then the town is yours: the canal at dusk, the whisky distilleries, sushi from the market, an izakaya for dinner. Sapporo is forty minutes away, should you want a taste of the city.

Your ski days

Ski Japan, following the snow: powder, trees and skins

Hokkaido’s snow comes from Siberia: cold air crosses the Sea of Japan, picks up moisture and falls on the island as light powder. Depending on the track of each storm, Niseko gets the snow, or the centre of the island does, and moving between stages over fifteen days gives you the best chance of being where it has fallen.

Each day starts with the safety briefing, the avalanche bulletin and the choice of area. Then the lifts, the rope, and off-piste beyond it, much of it in the trees; skins go on when the guide wants untracked slopes or a volcano, with up to 800 metres of climbing on the biggest days. The guide chooses each outing and can always turn back from a slope, whatever the plan says.

Tokachidake and Asahidake: the volcanoes on skins

From Furano, a ski town at the heart of the island, you reach Tomamu and the Daisetsuzan range, where fewer skiers come than on the west coast. Further from the sea, the air is colder and drier.

Tokachidake rises to 2,077 m, an active volcano whose fumaroles break through the snow. Asahidake, at 2,291 m the roof of Hokkaido, starts with a cable car, then a climb on skins between columns of steam. With fifteen days, you can wait for the right weather on each.

Hokkaido at dinner: izakaya, ramen and sake

Lunches and dinners are yours to choose, and over two weeks they become one of the pleasures of the trip. We change restaurants every evening: an izakaya, a bowl of ramen, a sake you have yet to try, the cooking of the island.

Breakfast is included at every stage, so each day begins with a proper meal before the minibus leaves for the snow.

The programme

Japan ski tour: how we build the fifteen days with you

  1. Your arrival

You land at New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, on the date we have set together. Flights from Tokyo arrive in the late afternoon, so a night in Tokyo on the way can help. The private minibus meets you and stays with the group for the whole trip.

  2. Niseko

The ryokan and its onsen, the birch forests of Niseko United, Rusutsu and Kiroro when the snow favours them, and Mount Yotei on skins if the weather allows.

  3. Otaru

A stage by the sea, at a hotel facing the marina, with Teine and Kokusai above Ishikari Bay.

  4. Furano and the centre of the island

Furano, Tomamu and the Daisetsuzan range, Tokachidake and Asahidake, in colder, drier air.

  5. A fourth stage

We keep it as a surprise.

  6. The way home

Transfer to New Chitose Airport for your flight.

We set the order and length of each stage with you, then adapt them to the snow, the weather and the group; the guide chooses each outing and has the final word on every slope.

Planning the Japan ski tour: your questions

When is the best time to ski in Japan?

January is the heart of the Hokkaido season, which skiers call Japanuary. The dates of the fifteen days are set with you: tell us when you can travel and we plan around it.

How much does a two-week ski trip to Japan cost?

€7,300 per person for fifteen days, excluding flights; allow around €1,200 for flights from major European cities. The price is set by the number of skiers in your group, and lunches, dinners and drinks are extra.

Is two weeks of skiing in Japan worth it?

Yes, if you want time to follow the snow. Depending on their track, storms favour Niseko or the centre of the island, and with four stages over fifteen days you have a good chance of skiing the best of it, with slower mornings in between.

Where do we stay?

Accommodation rated four-star by Japanese standards in Niseko, Otaru and Furano, in twin rooms with breakfast: a ryokan with an onsen in Niseko, a hotel facing the marina in Otaru, a warm, welcoming place in the middle of Furano. The fourth stage stays a surprise. A single room is available on request.

What level of skiing do I need?

Our Hokkaido trips call for technical level 3/5: at ease off-piste in deep snow, with some ski touring behind you. Over fifteen days we adjust the level, and the physical side, with you. To check where you stand: your off-piste skiing level and your ski touring fitness level.

How do I get to Hokkaido?

Fly to New Chitose Airport, Sapporo; from there every transfer is included, starting with about two and a half hours by minibus to Niseko. If you add a few days in Tokyo, the Japan National Tourism Organization covers travel across the country.

What does the price include?

Guiding, lift passes, the avalanche airbag pack, transceiver, shovel and probe, accommodation in twin rooms with breakfast, the private minibus and all transfers. Flights, lunches, dinners, drinks, insurance and your touring kit are at your own expense.

How do I book the fifteen days?

Write to us with your dates and the size of your group, by email or on WhatsApp, +33 6 51 66 58 53, and we’ll reply within 24 hours. A 30% deposit confirms the trip, the balance is due no later than two months before departure, and departures are guaranteed with a minimum of four skiers.
