Ski touring holidays, from the Lofoten fjords to the Dolomites

Twelve of our trips lend themselves to ski touring. In Lofoten, you skin up from the coast and ski all the way back to the shore; in the Lyngen and Bodø Alps, in Greenland, Svalbard and Antarctica, the boat takes you each morning to the foot of the peaks. Above the Arctic Circle, our week of ski touring in Norway, in Lofoten, costs from €3,500.

In the Alps, our ski touring trips take you to the Silvretta, in the Tyrol, with a stop at a hotel high in the mountains, or to the Dolomites, where the lifts bring you close to the spires before you put your skins on. In Hokkaido too, in the centre of the island, our week in Furano is given over to ski touring.

Heli skiing and heli ski touring: the helicopter takes you to the top

On a heli skiing trip, the helicopter collects you at the bottom of every run: in Sestriere, 20 km from the French border, for a weekend or a week; for seven days in the Kaçkar, above the Black Sea; and with a helicopter reserved for your group in the Chilean Andes and in Nepal’s Annapurnas.

In Iceland, heli ski touring pairs a morning drop with the climb on skins, and lets you ski Tröllaskagi in almost any weather. The dates and packages of every trip are all on our heli skiing page.

A word from our founder

Translated from French: Sailing among the ice, setting off on touring skis from a snowy beach to the top of a mountain, then skiing back down on untouched snow at the foot of a glacier … it’s far more than a trip, it’s a dream.

Your questions

How much does a backcountry ski trip cost?

For a week with us, allow, excluding flights, from €3,500 in Lofoten, €3,950 in Hokkaido or the Dolomites, €4,500 in the Tyrol, €5,950 in Kazakhstan or around Mont Blanc, €7,500 in Iceland or the Lyngen Alps, €8,500 in Greenland and €9,500 in Svalbard. Val d’Isère, Whistler, Jackson Hole, Antarctica, Bodø, the Ultimate packages and heli skiing in Italy, Turkey, Chile and Nepal are quoted on request, depending on your dates and your group. Tell us when you are coming and how many of you there are, and we’ll reply within 24 hours.

What is the best destination for a ski trip?

It depends on the month you travel, and our off-piste ski holidays follow the snow through the season: Hokkaido in January, for the lightness of its powder; Lofoten and the Lyngen Alps in March, to ski all the way down to the sea; Iceland in May, for a helicopter drop above the fjords; Svalbard in late May, for the midnight sun; the Chilean Andes in July and August, for the southern winter. The full calendar, trip by trip, is in our trip comparison.

What is ski touring, and where can I do it with you?

Ski touring means climbing on your skis, with skins on the bases and your heels free, then skiing back down, often through untracked snow. You can do it on twelve of our trips: in Lofoten; by ski and sail in the Lyngen and Bodø Alps, Greenland, Svalbard and Antarctica; in Iceland, after a morning helicopter drop; in the Tyrol and the Dolomites, in Whistler, in Val d’Isère and in Furano, in Japan. Before you go, you can follow the avalanche forecasts online, such as Varsom for Norway.

Ski touring, heli skiing, ski and sail or freeride: how do I choose?

It depends on what you love about skiing. Ski touring, for the quiet of the climb on skins and a run through the day’s snow; ski and sail, to ski down to the shore and sleep on board; heli skiing, to string one run after another, the helicopter taking you back up each time; freeride, to ski off-piste from a resort’s lifts, in Niseko, Whistler or Jackson Hole. In Kazakhstan, cat-skiing swaps the helicopter for a snowcat, which carries you to the top of the slopes, among the larches of the Altai.

What does the price of a trip include?

Guiding by a mountain professional, the avalanche airbag pack, transceiver, shovel and probe, your accommodation and, depending on the trip, meals, transport on the ground, helicopter drops or lift passes. Flights and insurance are at your own expense, as is, most of the time, your ski kit; the details are on each trip page.

Can we travel on other dates, or as a private group?

Yes, on most of our trips: with your own group, you can travel on dates other than our departures, on a programme adapted to you. In Kazakhstan, having the snowcat to yourselves takes a group of twelve skiers; in Iceland, with the Ultimate package, the helicopter and a hotel in Hjalteyri are for your group alone, on request.

How small are the groups on your ski trips?

On most of our trips, each guide takes a maximum of six skiers, with up to three groups per departure: in Japan, Lofoten, the Tyrol, around Mont Blanc, in Val d’Isère, Whistler and Jackson Hole. On the heli skiing trips, there are four skiers per guide in Sestriere and the Kaçkar, four or five in Iceland and six with four professionals in Chile, and in Nepal the Private package takes six skiers with two guides. On board, there are twelve skiers at most in Greenland, and in Svalbard too, where you ski in two groups of six. The Bodø Alps trip takes two groups of four, the Lyngen Alps trip ten skiers in two groups of five, and the ship in Antarctica takes 16 to 20 skiers. In Kazakhstan, two groups of six share the snowcat, and in the Dolomites you travel in a group of five to seven.
