Heli-assisted ski touring in Iceland AKUREYRI - Heliskiing and backcountry skiing on the Trollaskagi Peninsula

7 days / 6 nights / 6 days of skiing

There are places in the world where the mountains are unlike any other. Iceland is one of them. Volcanoes rise from the Atlantic, north faces plunge directly into the fjords, and the snow—fresh, light, often fallen the very night before—awaits you untouched with every helicopter takeoff. Here, backcountry skiing in Iceland isn't a niche activity. It's a geographical given.

PowderWeGo takes you to the north of the island, around Akureyri and the Trollaskagi Peninsula , for a week of helicopter touring in Iceland in a seaside lodge with chef, sauna and jacuzzi.

Each day, the helicopter drops your group off on summits you would not have reached otherwise.

Every evening, you come home with legs full of elevation gain and images that won't fade.

  • One helicopter drop per day - lines that only a helicopter can reach, untouched and out of reach

  • Skiing down the slopes of active volcanoes in cold powder snow that you're the first to hit

  • Returning to the lodge each evening, enjoying the sauna, the jacuzzi, and a dinner prepared by a chef using local produce

  • The Icelandic light of early April — that rare, low, almost unreal quality that transforms every descent into a dreamlike landscape

  • Four skiers, one guide, an entire terrain — the most generous ratio you can offer in the mountains

SKIING IN ICELAND: Discovering the north of the island in Viking lands

Iceland is a volcanic island situated on the edge of the Arctic Circle—a living geological landscape where glaciers, lava flows, fjords, and tundra coexist within a few hundred kilometers. For the off-piste skier, it's a promise few other destinations can deliver: untouched terrain on every outing, snow that no one has yet touched, and raw nature untouched by ski lifts.

The north of the island, around Akureyri, boasts the best conditions of the season. The Trollaskagi Peninsula is an exceptionally rich backcountry skiing area: north-facing slopes protected from the sun, well-oriented couloirs, glacial valleys and long descents that end in the arms of the fjords.

The snow there is cold, dense, and regularly replenished by Atlantic weather systems. At the beginning of April, the snowpack is at its best.

By choosing helicopters as the sole mode of access, PowderWeGo opens up areas that traditional ski touring groups never reach. This heli-assisted ski touring trip in Iceland is for skiers who refuse to ski where others have already made tracks—and who know that the best snow is always where no one has gone before.

HELI-ASSISTED SKI TOURING IN CELAND — AKUREYRI TO TROLLASKAGI

Four skiers, a guide, a helicopter. This is how each day of our backcountry skiing expedition in Iceland begins. After a hearty breakfast at the lodge, the group heads towards the drop zone. The aircraft gains altitude, the fjords recede beneath the skis, and the helicopter silently drops the group on the heights of Trollaskagi—on a face that no one else skied that very morning.

The heli-skiing terrain around Trollaskagi in Iceland is among the most varied in the entire Arctic: steep, pristine north faces, wide open slopes, descents through boreal forest, and runs that end at the edge of fjords. Guides choose the day's line based on recent snowfall, aspect, and avalanche conditions. One drop per day is included in the package. Additional drops are available as an option, subject to availability—because sometimes one drop isn't as many as you'd like.

Back at the lodge in the late afternoon. Debriefing, sauna, jacuzzi. The chef prepares dinner using local ingredients. The Icelandic light of early April streams through the bay windows onto the fjords. We're far from everything—and that's exactly what we were looking for. This blend of backcountry skiing and understated, cozy comfort is what makes this week in Iceland truly unique.

HELI-ASSISTED BACKCOUNTRY SKIING PROGRAM in Iceland — 7 days departing from Akureyri

islande_iceland_edited_edited.jpg

Day 1 — Tuesday: Arrival in Akureyri

Meet at Akureyri Airport in the late afternoon, around 5:00 PM. You will be met at the terminal exit by your PowderWeGo guide. Enjoy a quick snack before transferring by minibus to the lodge, located near Dalvik (a 45-minute drive). Check in and receive a presentation of the week's program. Dinner at the lodge.

Days 2 to 6 — Wednesday to Monday: Heli-assisted ski touring on Trollaskagi

After breakfast, it's off to the drop zone. The helicopter climbs above the fjords, lands on the heights of the Trollaskagi Peninsula , and drops you off on a face you're seeing for the first time. Each day brings a new summit, a new aspect, untouched terrain. The guides read the snowpack, choose the line, and the group sets off.

Off-piste skiing in Iceland ranges from 400 to 800 meters of vertical drop, depending on the area—steep north faces, wide open couloirs, runs that end with your feet in the fjords. The pace is tailored to the group: demanding, precise, but never forcing. That's what it's like: four skiers with a guide.

Return to the lodge in the mid-afternoon.

Sauna, jacuzzi, debriefing with the guides. The chef prepares dinner—generous cuisine, local produce, shared table. The evenings are short because the mornings start early. But each evening, the group gathers around the same table, in that far-north atmosphere that is as much a part of the trip as the descents themselves.

Day 7 — Tuesday: Skiing then departure from Akureyri

Last day of skiing departing from the lodge. Transfer by minibus to Akureyri airport at the end of the day. Departure with volcanoes, fjords and virgin snow still in your legs.
