Heli skiing trips: our five destinations

Each trip has its own mountains and its own way of skiing. In Iceland, where the mountains are like nowhere else, a helicopter drop each morning opens up the Tröllaskagi peninsula, then skinning takes you on to summits that fall into the sea. In Sestriere, just over the border from France, you can go heli skiing for a day, a weekend or a whole week. In the Kaçkar, above the Black Sea, you taste the freedom of off-piste skiing in quiet sectors with few other skiers. In Chile, around the San José volcano, the helicopter is reserved for six skiers, guided by four professionals. In Nepal, a helicopter dedicated to your group of six lifts off from Pokhara and sets you down in the Annapurna Sanctuary, then in the Manang Valley.

A day of heli skiing, from the briefing to the last turn

In Sestriere the day starts at around 8 am: you are handed your avalanche airbag pack, transceiver, shovel and probe, then comes the briefing. The helicopter lifts off from the resort’s heliport and sets you down in one of the five heli skiing sectors of the Upper Susa Valley, where more than 80 runs await, over 800 to 1,600 m of vertical. Depending on the package, you take one to four drops, and you can mix helicopter drops with ski touring. Everything is set out on our page on heli skiing in Italy.

In the Kaçkar, the helicopter collects you outside the hotel in Ayder, and the first drops are a few minutes’ flight away. Runs drop from 3,600 m down to 1,200 m, with 700 to 1,200 m of vertical on average, mostly in open terrain, sometimes down into the forest. The nearby Black Sea brings plentiful snow. Our page on heli skiing in Turkey takes you through the week, step by step.

A skier in powder among frosted larches, Sestriere

Safety in heli skiing, slope after slope

Your group heads out with a PowderWeGo professional who specialises in off-piste and heli skiing. The guide reads the snowpack, chooses the line and sets the pace for the group; the programme follows the snow, the weather and your wishes, and the guide has the final word, for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.

The flying is entrusted to pilots we work with regularly: in Sestriere, our partner air operator has been based there since 2010 and flies in line with the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC); in the Kaçkar, a team of pilots from Switzerland flies the Écureuil B3. When the helicopter stays on the ground, the day carries on: in Sestriere, the guide offers a day of off-piste or freeride touring and the helicopter share of the price is refunded; in Iceland, the skins take you skiing in almost any weather.

After skiing

Evenings at the Icelandic lodge or the Turkish bath in Ayder

In Iceland, our lodge awaits you on the shore of the fjord, a few kilometres north of Dalvík: sauna, hot tub, a debrief with the guides, then the chef’s dinner, generous cooking with local produce, at a shared table. Evenings are short, as the mornings start early, and that far-north atmosphere is as much a part of the trip as the runs themselves. The week is described in detail on our page on Iceland skiing.

In the Kaçkar, the hotel in Ayder welcomes you with its Turkish bath, sauna and hot tub, and dinner introduces you to local specialities. In Sestriere you stay in a comfortable hotel, and in the evening Italian cooking awaits you in town or at the hotel. In Chile, you choose your home for the week: an adobe lodge in the Cajón del Maipo, facing the San José volcano, a five-star hotel in the heart of Santiago, with the helicopter lifting off each morning from a rooftop in the city, or a wine estate in the Millahue valley. In Nepal, the evening brings you back down to Pokhara, to a five-star resort where the pool waits beneath the palm trees: from summits at 5,300 m to tropical pools, all in the same day.

A word from our founder

The helicopter sets you down at the top of a powder slope and the whole run is yours. You choose the setting: Iceland, where you ski all the way down to the sea, the Kaçkar with a Turkish bath to follow, Sestriere and its Italian cooking, the southern winter of Chile, or Nepal and the pool under the palms in Pokhara. For off-piste skiers at ease in powder, in small groups.

Heli skiing: your questions

What is heli skiing?

Heli skiing means a helicopter flies you to the top of the slope and lifts you back up after each run: one to four drops a day in Sestriere, seven days of heli skiing in the Kaçkar, a private helicopter for your group in Chile and in Nepal. Heli-assisted ski touring is the other approach: a morning drop opens up the terrain, then you carry on with skins, which is how our week in Iceland works. A 100% heli-skiing option can be requested there before booking, and private heliskiing, with the helicopter for your group alone, is also possible on request.

Why is heli skiing banned in France?

Because French law prohibits dropping off passengers by aircraft for leisure in the mountains, outside aerodromes and authorised sites (Article L. 363-1 of the Environment Code, which stems from the 1985 Mountain Law). French skiers therefore go heli skiing abroad, often close by: Sestriere, in Italy, is 20 km from the border.

How much does heli skiing cost?

The price of our heli skiing trips depends on your dates, the size of your group and the number of drops. It covers your guide and safety kit (avalanche airbag pack, transceiver, shovel and probe) and, depending on the trip, your hotel and meals. Heli ski touring in Iceland costs €7,500 per person for the week, excluding flights. Tell us when you are coming and how many of you there are, and we’ll reply within 24 hours.

How much does a helicopter drop cost?

In Sestriere, the first drop is included in the price of the day; you can add up to three more, at extra cost. In the Kaçkar, the trip includes 30,500 m of vertical, and you can ski more, at extra cost. In Iceland, one drop a day is included, and more can be added on request, depending on helicopter availability and the flight plan.

Is heli skiing difficult?

You need to be at ease off-piste and in deep snow: technical level 3/5 on our trips. The fitness level needed is 2/5 in Sestriere, where you walk for two hours at most, 3/5 in the Kaçkar, with seven heli-skiing days back to back, and 3/5 in Iceland, where heli ski touring adds a climb on skins each day. In Chile, we ask that you be a strong off-piste skier, comfortable in all snow conditions, and in Nepal, a strong, self-reliant off-piste skier. To check where you stand: your off-piste skiing level and your ski touring fitness level.

How risky is heli skiing?

Like all off-piste skiing, heli skiing takes place in unpatrolled mountain terrain, with an avalanche risk, and the whole day is organised to reduce it. Every skier wears an avalanche airbag pack and carries a transceiver, shovel and probe, all provided by us. The guide reads the snowpack, chooses the slope and the pace, and the programme adapts each day to the snow and the weather, with the guide having the final word.

What happens on days the helicopter stays on the ground?

You still ski. In Sestriere, if the weather prevents flying, the guide offers a day of off-piste or freeride touring, and the helicopter share of the day’s price is refunded. In Iceland, heli ski touring keeps its advantage: with skins, we ski in almost all conditions, even when the helicopter stays on the ground.

When is the best time to go heli skiing?

It depends on the hemisphere. Our week in Iceland is planned for April 2027, in the low early-spring light of the Tröllaskagi peninsula. In Chile, heli skiing happens during the southern winter, in July and August, and we give you the dates of our trip on request. In Nepal, our heli-skiing weeks run in March and April 2027, Saturday to Saturday. In the Kaçkar, there are 14 departures, every Saturday from 9 January to 10 April 2027, each for nine days. For heliskiing holidays in Sestriere, you ski from January to April, on dates we set with you.
