Lofoten Islands: The best touring skiing spots between sea and mountains

TheLofoten Islands archipelago is located in the north-west of Norway. It stretches from the mainland into the Arctic Ocean, covering an area of about 1,200 km2 (460 square miles). The highest peak is Hivravstinden at 1,146 m. The landscape is quite typical: steep mountains plunging into Arctic fjords forming intimate bays with narrow coastal strips where roads and villages cluster.

During this ski trip you will be staying in a comfortable 3-star hotel, in rorbuer, the colourful fishermen's huts characteristic of Lofoten. In response to the development of tourism, traditional dwellings have been fitted out with all mod cons. After your touring skiing days, in the heart of the majestic fjords, you can admire the exceptional spectacle of the twilight and the Northern Lights, to whale song. An unforgettable journey, simply magical!

This touring skiing holiday in the Lofoten Islands is open to backcountry skiers of intermediate to expert level, in good physical shape. It is organised around daily touring ski outings. These start at the coastline and take you on relatively easy climbs of 3 to 5 hours walking per day and typical vertical descents of 600 m to 1000 m on the slopes.

Once on the ridges, where the views are breathtaking, we can descend by backcountry skiing, both on tricky corridors and gentler slopes through forests, down to the seashore. The itineraries are chosen each morning according to the weather, the amount of sea ice, the snow conditions and your wishes.

 

We have a private minibus at our disposal for the duration of the trip. Thus, we are free to decide on the starting and finishing points of the routes. The main islands of the archipelago are all connected by a network of bridges and tunnels. As an option and depending on the conditions, we can organise one or more days of touring skiing on more isolated islands, accessible only by boat, such as Stormolla and Litlmolla

After your backcountry skiing day, you can relax in the warmth of a sauna, before dining in or out. You can end your evenings in the beauty of the most charming villages at the end of the world, such as Svolvær, Henningsvær or Reine.

OUTLINE OF YOUR SKI HOLIDAY IN THE LOFOTEN ISLANDS

Day 1 : Oslo-Bodø-Svolvaer flight. Depending on your departure airport, it may be necessary to arrive in Oslo the day before.

Transfer from the airport to our Lofoten Lodge.

After a quick snack, initial short ski tour to check the state of the equipment (in the event of a problem, it will be possible to repair it in town the next day). Dinner in town and overnight at the hotel.


Days 2: After breakfast at the Lofoten Ski Lodge, we will set off in the morning for a hike and skiing. In the late afternoon we will return to Svolvær harbour and enjoy a moment of relaxation.


Day 3 to 8 : 6 days of ski touring around various fjords and on different islands.


Day 8: Morning in Svolvær, then flight back to Oslo and further connections to your destination.

 

The programme of our ski trips is indicative. It may be modified according to snow and weather conditions, and the skiing level and wishes of the group, to ensure the safety and pleasure of all. The accompanying guide is the sole judge in this matter.

Number of travel days: 8

Number of ski days: 6 to 7

Technical level: 3/5 experience of ski touring and off-piste skiing in deep snow.

Physical level: 3/5 capable of moderate effort for several hours.

Number of participants: maximum 3 groups of 6 people + 3 guides.

Price :€3,500* / person excluding flights

Payment: 30% deposit on booking, balance no later than 2 months before departure. Payments by bank transfer or credit card.

*Our package includes:

For 1 group of 6 guests + 1 guide (3 groups maximum)

  • Supervision of the stay by a PowderWeGo professional

  • A private minibus for a week

  • 7 nights in a lodge in a double room (single room supplement), breakfast included

  • Picnic lunches for full-day ski tours

  • Safety packs (ABS® airbag or equivalent, avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe)

Our package does not include:

  • Return flight and transfer to Svolvaer*

  • Touring skiing clothing and equipment: suitable clothing, poles with large baskets, touring skis, ski skins, climbing knives, helmets. Please contact us if you have any questions or difficulties in finding this kit. Bring 2 bags (travel bag + ski bag).

  • Personal drinks and snacks, fuelling food and drinks for the day (dried fruit, cereal bars, chocolate, energy bars and drinks, etc.),

  • Lunches (excluding picnics), dinners, drinks and tips

  • Insurance.

* Flights to Oslo-Gardermoen from major European countries cost around €200 and flights from Oslo to Svolvær via Bodø cost around €500. Please note: prefer Oslo-Gardermoen airport, otherwise allow time for transfers.

The Oslo-Svolvær flight can be included in your package.
