Ski and sail: five trips, from Greenland to Antarctica

We take you skiing where the mountains drop into the sea, and the boat is what gets you there. In Greenland, between Maniitsoq and the Eternity Fjord; in Svalbard, at 78° North, under the midnight sun; for ski and sail in Norway, in the still little-known Bodø Alps, close to Lofoten, and in the Lyngen Alps, ski country you reach by sea; in Antarctica, beyond Cape Horn. Each day of ski and sail, you skin up from the shore and ski back down to the tender that takes you on board.

Ski and sail: a new fjord every day

Each morning you make up your picnic at the buffet on board, the tender lands you on a beach, and the climb on skins begins at sea level. While you ski, the boat moves to the next anchorage and waits for you below: you take off your skis, climb back aboard, and the scenery changes with the next fjord. For Svalbard skiing, the route runs north from Isfjorden to Ny-Ålesund and Kongsfjorden, along Prins Karls Forland and St. Jonsfjorden.

In Greenland, from the Inuit port of Maniitsoq, we work north up the coast, with a stop at Kangaamiut, to the mouth of the Eternity Fjord, in search of the finest slopes and the best snow. From the deck you watch the islands, glaciers and icebergs slip by, and a few summits of over 2,000 m that drop into the sea. In the evening the tender brings you back on board, the chef cooks dinner, and the boat weighs anchor for the next stop: the week is set out in full on our page on Greenland skiing.

Life on board, between anchorages

On board, the communal areas are heated for the Arctic and the day keeps to the rhythm of the mountain: a full breakfast in the morning, a picnic made on board for lunch, a snack when you come back from skiing, then a three-course dinner at a shared table. The double cabins are compact and warm, with bunk beds in Svalbard. On our ski and sail trip in Norway’s Bodø Alps, the boat offers a hot shower every day and a cupboard for drying ski boots; in the evening, with a little luck, the northern lights and the whales.

Each boat has its own character. In Svalbard, the Noorderlicht, a two-masted schooner built in 1910; in Greenland, our boat, with its crew and its chef; in the Lyngen Alps, our sailing boat, chartered for your group; in Antarctica, an expedition sailing boat, which rounds Cape Horn before crossing the Drake Passage.

Your ski days

Ski touring from the sea: every line chosen in the morning

These trips are for skiers at ease off-piste and in deep snow, with ski touring experience and good fitness: level 3/5 for technique and for fitness. The climbs start from the shore, over 600 to 1,300 m of vertical depending on the trip, and the runs bring you all the way back to the sea, in snow that changes with the latitude: the light, deep powder of Svalbard in late May, the spring corn of Greenland in April and May, the dense, supportive southern snow of the Antarctic Peninsula.

The guides choose the lines in real time, according to the stability of the snowpack, the aspect and the weather; in Antarctica, they scout them from the deck at dawn. Avalanche airbag pack, transceiver, shovel and probe are provided, and in Svalbard the guides follow a polar bear protocol. The programme may change: it follows the sea, the snow and the group, and the guides and the captain have the final word.

A word from our founder

The boat drops you each morning at the foot of a mountain; you tour up, ski all the way down to the sea, then climb back aboard to your cabin, dinner on board and a new anchorage. Depending on the trip, the midnight sun of Svalbard, the northern lights or the whales keep you company. It suits ski tourers at ease off-piste who like the idea of the boat as base camp.

What our travellers say

Translated from French: Sailing among the ice, setting off on touring skis from a snowy beach to the top of a mountain, then skiing back down on untouched snow at the foot of a glacier … it’s far more than a trip, it’s a dream.

Ski and sail: your questions

How does a day of ski and sail work?

After breakfast, you make up your picnic at the buffet on board and the tender lands you on the beach, at the foot of the route. You skin up with the guides, ski down to the shore, then climb back aboard to unwind before dinner, while the boat moves on to the next anchorage.

What level of skiing do I need for a ski and sail trip?

Technical level 3/5 and fitness level 3/5 on our departures: a strong off-piste skier, with ski touring experience in deep snow, capable of moderate effort for several hours. In Svalbard, slopes rarely exceed 40°, for an advanced to expert skier in all snow conditions. To check where you stand: your off-piste skiing level and your ski touring fitness level.

When is the best time to go on a ski and sail trip?

Between March and late May for the Arctic. In 2027: 21 to 28 March in the Lyngen Alps, April and May in Greenland, 24 to 31 May in Svalbard, under the midnight sun. In the Bodø Alps the season runs from March to April, and the Antarctic voyages sail in November and December, with exact dates on request.

How much does a ski and sail trip cost?

From €7,500 per person for the week in the Lyngen Alps, €8,500 in Greenland and €9,500 in Svalbard, excluding flights. Allow around €400 to €700 more for flights to Longyearbyen from major European cities, or around €1,300 from Copenhagen to Maniitsoq, plus about €150 to reach Copenhagen. For Bodø and Antarctica, we give you the price on request.

Where do you sleep on a ski and sail trip?

On board, in a double cabin: the Noorderlicht in Svalbard, our boat in Greenland, our sailing boat, chartered for your group, in the Lyngen Alps, an Arctic expedition sailing boat in the Bodø Alps and an expedition sailing boat in Antarctica. A single cabin can be requested when you book, depending on the boat and availability.

Is there skiing in Greenland?

Yes, all the way down to the sea. In Greenland you go ski touring from the boat. From Maniitsoq, on the south-west coast, the climbs start at sea level and rise 800 to 1,300 m on average, on slopes of light snow above the Eternity Fjord.

Who runs ski and sail trips in Greenland and Svalbard?

PowderWeGo, based in Val d’Isère, designs both trips and guides them on the ground; you book through our partner agency, Aereau Voyages, which organises and sells them. In Greenland, a week aboard our boat between Maniitsoq and the Eternity Fjord, in April and May 2027, from €8,500; in Svalbard, a week aboard the Noorderlicht, from Longyearbyen to Ny-Ålesund, 24 to 31 May 2027, from €9,500, for 12 skiers at most. On either trip, you ski with PowderWeGo professionals, and we provide the avalanche airbag pack, transceiver, shovel and probe. You will find all our ski touring holidays on a single page, and we’ll reply within 24 hours.

What does the price include?

Depending on the trip: guiding by PowderWeGo professionals, nights on board in a double cabin, meals on board and safety kit (avalanche airbag pack, transceiver, shovel and probe). Flights, your ski touring kit, alcoholic drinks and insurance are at your own expense.
