Ski Niseko the freeride touring way: lifts first, then the skins

Freeride touring uses the lifts for what they do well. They take you high on the mountain; then the skins go on and you climb on, up to 800 metres on the bigger days, towards quieter slopes away from the lifts. At the top, skins off, boots locked, and your guide shows you the line. The first turn sinks into light snow that rises around you, and the next follows of its own accord.

This is how we ski Niseko: one quiet slope after another, in a small group. Annupuri, Hirafu, Hanazono and Moiwa share the same mountain within the Niseko United ski area, and our Niseko piste map shows how they link up.

Niseko ski holidays, seven nights in one ryokan

You unpack once, on the first evening, and close the case on the last morning. Your twin room is in a ryokan with its own onsen, breakfast is served before you head for the lifts, and the week soon finds its rhythm.

Boots off at the door, jackets drying in the hall, then the hot water of the onsen: legs unwind, and the talk drifts back to the afternoon’s last run. Travelling alone, or simply preferring a room to yourself? A single room is available for €125 per night.

A Niseko ski trip for skiers at ease off-piste

This Niseko ski trip suits skiers who are at ease off-piste and in deep snow, with a little ski touring behind them: technique 3/5, fitness 2/5. Most of the height comes from the lifts; the skins add climbs of up to 800 metres, taken at the group’s pace, with time to look around.

Each morning your guide chooses the terrain for the snow and the weather, so two days rarely look alike. If you are unsure where you stand, tell us about your last few days off-piste when you write, and we’ll look at it together.

From New Chitose to Niseko, with Mount Yotei ahead

You land at New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, where we meet you. The minibus reaches Niseko in about two and a half hours, between banks of snow taller than the car, and the transfer is included both ways.

Mount Yotei, 1,898 metres, stands opposite Niseko. On a clear morning its white cone is the first thing you look for, and it keeps you company all week.

January powder in the birch forests

In January, cold air from Siberia gathers moisture over the Sea of Japan and lets it fall on Hokkaido as light, dry snow. Late January sits in the heart of the season, and between the widely spaced birches the powder stays cold and light for days.

It makes a fine introduction to backcountry skiing in Japan: short climbs, long runs through the trees, the forest hushed around you. The Japan Meteorological Agency publishes its forecasts in English, if you like to watch the snow coming in before you fly.

After breakfast, your first full day of freeride touring around Niseko: the lifts first, then the skins, on terrain chosen that morning for the snow and the weather.

  3. Days 3 to 7

A word from our founder

Picture the end of a January day in Niseko: skins folded into the pack, the last run through the birches still in your legs, and the ryokan’s onsen waiting. All week you come back to the same place, the same bath, the same breakfast table, and the mountain grows familiar enough to ski with a little more freedom each morning. We keep the groups to six skiers per guide, so there is always time to stop and look across at Mount Yotei.

A standard you can feel

Every ski day is led by a BEES-qualified ski instructor specialising in off-piste, and/or a UIAGM mountain guide. Six skiers per guide, terrain chosen each morning for the snow, the weather and the Niseko avalanche information, avalanche airbag pack, transceiver, shovel and probe provided. When the snow or the weather calls for it, the guide changes the plan, and that call always comes first. We plan all our ski trips from Val d’Isère, and we’ll reply within 24 hours.

Niseko skiing: your questions

When is the Niseko ski week?
