Seven in the morning, and the window of the rorbu looks out on a black jetty and a sea that steams faintly. Outside it's a few degrees below zero. And still the snow is there — right up to the timber of the jetty, right down to the line of seaweed the tide left yesterday. That's the first thing that throws you in Lofoten: your eye goes hunting for the height at which the snow begins, and never finds it. It begins at the sea.
Before the coffee, two browser tabs are already open. That's the real morning ritual out here, the one that decides the day far more than waxing skins or checking the pack. You read the mountain before you go out into it.

Snow at sea level, and the Gulf Stream we owe it to
A snowpack that runs down to the shoreline is not a given. At 68° north, Lofoten lies well above the Arctic Circle. On the same parallel, elsewhere on the planet, you get permafrost and nights of an altogether different cold. Here the March lows sit around minus two or minus three, the highs struggle just above freezing, and the sea itself holds at around five degrees — cold, but never freezing over out in the open water.
It's the Gulf Stream that writes this paradox. The current pushes up the Atlantic, hugs the Norwegian coast and tempers an archipelago that, without it, would be locked in pack ice. The Lofoten climate is subpolar oceanic: mild for the latitude, never the deep continental cold, but cold enough — around the freezing mark — to hold snow at sea level. It's a set-up you find almost nowhere else: a skiable snowpack that starts at the jetties and climbs towards modest summits.
And modest they are. The high point of the archipelago, Higravstinden, tops out at 1,146 metres. The whole chain — some 1,200 square kilometres of it — is narrow, jagged, ringed on every side by that cold sea. The upshot: the altitude bands the Alps train you to think in — resort base, forest, alpine pasture, glacier — are compressed here. Very compressed. From the tideline to the highest summit there's barely a thousand metres, and a good deal less almost everywhere else.
Which changes everything about how you read the snow.
Altitude tells you nothing here
In the Alps you start the day with a number in your head: how high the snow has stayed cold, and where it has turned. That number is no use in Lofoten. Between the shore and the summits, the temperature spread isn't wide enough to make two different snows. What counts is aspect. It's the wind.
An archipelago reaching into the Atlantic like an open hand takes the wind full in the face. And the wind doesn't just blow: it works the snow. It scours it off the exposed faces — the windward slope, the one that meets the flow — and drops it further on, sheltered, on the lee slopes. That deposit, that load carried from one aspect to the next by the wind, is exactly what builds a wind slab. And the wind slab is the first hazard you watch.
This needs saying plainly, because instinct lies: a slope that's well filled in, smooth, inviting, can be precisely the most loaded and the most unstable. The wind shifts snow the cold keeps dry, and where that snow piles up is the difference between a face you ski and one you don't put your skins on.

Hence the morning ritual. You pick the mountain by aspect, by what the wind has done with the snow these past few days.
What you read before you set off
The first tab is Varsom, the Norwegian avalanche warning service. Region: Lofoten og Vesterålen. The bulletin goes out daily from 1 December to 31 May, published before four in the afternoon — covering all of our March and April window. You read the danger rating for the day, but above all the detail that matters to us: which slopes, which aspects, which elevations are the problem. That's the detail that shuts down one sector and opens another.
The second tab is seNorge, the national snow map. It gives snow depths and water equivalent, sector by sector, as public data. It tells us where the pack is deep, where it's still thin, where the last fall came down. Crossed with the forecast from MET Norway — wind over the last forty-eight hours, direction, strength — the map tells the story of the pack far better than a glance out the window.
Out of those two tabs and the glass, you draw a decision. The bulletin flags considerable danger on north-east to east slopes above six hundred metres? You strike out the couloirs that look that way. The wind blew south-west three days running? Then you know where the deposits went, and you'll go find a slope that's been stripped rather than reloaded.

And you have to know how to walk away. Some mornings the reading leaves no choice: the line you'd picked out the day before is exactly the one the bulletin warns against. You leave it. You take another, less steep, running back down to the fjord. That backing-off — learned and owned — is what makes the good weeks.

Snow that holds without daily dumps
We sometimes picture the far north as a powder machine that never stops. That isn't Lofoten, and it's better to know it. Through March the fresh falls tend to thin out as the month goes on: over a rolling month, roughly seventeen centimetres accumulate in early March, about ten by the end of it.
Which means the quality isn't riding on the last fall. It comes from the pack already in place, and the cold that keeps it. Snow that fell a week ago, held dry by nights below zero, redistributed from one aspect to the next by the wind, is often worth more than fresh snow heavy with ocean damp. The morning's work, once again, is knowing where that snow landed and what state it's in.
Another honesty: the sky. It's overcast or heavily clouded about three-quarters of the time in early March, a little under seven days in ten by month's end. We're not going to claim permanent Arctic sun. There are days of low ceiling and flat light. There are also the breaks where the sea, the white peaks and the red fishing villages line up all at once, and that's when you understand why you came. Both exist. And we tell you both.
Changing islands when the snow says so
This is where the geography of Lofoten turns into a concrete advantage. The main islands are joined by a network of bridges and tunnels. With a private minibus for the whole week, the morning decision doesn't stop at "which slope", it stretches to "which island". If the wind loaded the south of one island and spared the north of another, forty minutes down the road, that's where you go. The start and finish of a tour get decided that same morning.
And when conditions allow, you push further — out to isolated islands reached only by boat, like Stormolla or Litlmolla, where you land to ski a face no one has touched. Mobility, here, serves the reading of the snow. It lets you get precisely to where the pack is good that day.

The tours start at sea level and the descents bring you back to it: six hundred metres to a kilometre of vertical, sometimes through a committing couloir, sometimes down a broad, even slope. Three to five hours of skinning over the day, ascents around nine hundred metres. Intermediate to expert skiing, good fitness, and the appetite to ski all the way to the sea. Questions we get asked
Does the snow really hold down to the sea?
It does, and that anomaly is the whole point of the place. The Gulf Stream keeps temperatures around the freezing mark — cold enough for the pack to hold at sea level, mild enough that the sea stays ice-free.
How do you know which slope is skiable in the morning?
You cross the same sources every morning, before the coffee: the avalanche bulletin for the region, the snow map for depth sector by sector, and the forecast for the direction and strength of the last two days of wind. Put them together and one sector shuts down while another opens.
Do I need a particular level?
Intermediate to expert skiing and good fitness. The days run three to five hours of skinning, for descents of six hundred metres to a kilometre.

In the evening you go back over the day: the loaded slope you left on your right, and the one you took instead.
