Lofoten skiing: the level, the season and the kit for skiing down to the sea
You ski off-piste with pleasure and dream of couloirs that run all the way to the sea. If you are comfortable in deep snow and can manage three to five hours of skinning, you have the level for Lofoten skiing. March is the heart of the season, and your kit bag comes together in an evening, as we provide all the safety equipment.
The day-by-day itinerary and the price have their own article, on the week in Lofoten from 13 to 20 March 2027. Here, we talk about your level, the season and what you bring.
The level you need for Lofoten ski touring in winter
Here is what a day of Lofoten ski touring looks like. You click in at sea level, you skin for three to five hours, then you ski descents of 600 metres to a kilometre of vertical, often right down to the sea. Some lines drop through committing couloirs, others through gentler wooded slopes. The professional with you chooses the route each morning, reading the weather, the state of the sea, the snow and the group's wishes, and the decision rests with them.

What matters is being a strong off-piste skier, at ease in all snow types, and self-reliant. You already have some ski touring behind you, and you know how to manage your skins, your ski crampons and your effort over several hours. The terrain runs from rocky mountains down to the sea, with no glacier: this is ski touring, with no mountaineering involved.
Groups stay small, six skiers at most, with no more than three groups, and you ski six to seven days out of the eight on the trip. Every morning, a briefing takes stock of conditions. The pro reads the Norwegian avalanche bulletin, Varsom / NVE, for the "Lofoten og Vesterålen" region, published daily before 4 pm from 1 December to 31 May, and the day's terrain follows from it.

What a day actually looks like
Out of the private minibus, skins on at the water's edge, a steady climb to a ridge between 600 and 1,000 metres, a picnic stop on the pure touring days, then the descent to the shore. In the evening, the sauna.
A single descent can give you powder up top and transformed snow lower down: if you can adapt your skiing to whatever turns up, you will love it. To understand how the day's spot gets decided, see our article on snow and wind conditions in Lofoten.
To place yourself more broadly, our article on what level you need for an adventure ski trip rounds out these markers.
