Narvik ski touring, from the Ofotfjord to Tromsø

Narvik stretches along the Ofotfjord, well north of the Arctic Circle, with the Narvikfjellet ski area just above the town. From there to Tromsø the coast breaks into fjords and large islands, Hinnøya and Senja among them, and the mountains run straight down into the sea.

For most visitors, skiing in Narvik means Narvikfjellet and its lifts. This week takes you further along the coast: the boat carries you to the foot of the peaks, you climb on skins with your guide setting the track, and the run brings you back down towards the sea.

A comfortable trawler, for your group alone

For the week, the boat is your home: a 28-metre trawler with six cabins, two of them suites with their own bathroom, and a crew of three, including a cook who prepares every meal. You are on full board from the first evening to the last morning.

When you come back aboard after the day’s skiing, the sauna is waiting. Two rigid inflatable tenders are ready to take you ashore again the next morning.

Your ski days

Ski cruise days, from the morning tender to the run down to the sea

After the morning briefing, the tender lands you at the foot of the mountain. Skins on, and the skin track leads you up for three to six hours to the summit. Then the best part: the run down, all the way to the sea, before the tender takes you back aboard.

Each morning your guide chooses the route to suit the snow, the weather and what you feel like skiing, and turns back when it matters. That is the pleasure of ski touring by boat: a new mountain every day, and dinner afloat in the evening.

From one fjord to the next, all the way to Tromsø

Late in the day or overnight, the boat moves on to the next day’s anchorage, so each morning opens on a new mountain. Over the week you travel north along the coast, between fjords and islands, and reach Tromsø on the last morning.

March and April, as the light comes back

In March the light returns quickly after the long winter, and the nights are still dark enough for the northern lights to appear above the fjord on clear evenings; they depend on the weather and on solar activity. By April the days have grown long, and there is time to enjoy each tour at your own pace.

Your questions

Can you go ski touring around Narvik?

Yes: the mountains around Narvik and along the coast to Tromsø run straight down into the fjords, and our ski cruise takes you to them by boat. Above the town, Narvikfjellet is the lift-served ski area; on this week you skin up from the shore with your guide, then ski all the way back down to the sea.

When is the best time to go skiing in Narvik?

March and April. In March the light returns and the nights are still dark enough for the northern lights; in April the days are long. Departure dates are on request: tell us which month suits you.

How do I get to Narvik, and home from Tromsø?

Fly to Harstad/Narvik airport at Evenes, for boarding in Narvik in the late afternoon of day 1; the trip ends in Tromsø on the morning of day 8, with flights home from Tromsø. Depending on your connections, a night in Oslo the evening before may be needed. Both airports are run by Avinor, which publishes timetables and practical information.

What level do I need?

A strong off-piste skier, at ease in all snow conditions, with some ski touring experience: technical level 3/5, with three to six hours of skinning a day. To check where you stand: your off-piste skiing level and your ski touring fitness level.

What is life aboard like?

You sleep aboard a comfortable 28-metre trawler reserved for your group, in one of six cabins, two of them suites with a private bathroom. A crew of three looks after you, including a cook, and the trip is full board. Two rigid inflatable tenders take you ashore at the foot of the peaks; in the evening the sauna is waiting.

What does the price include?

The price, on request, covers the trawler reserved for your group, seven nights on board with full board, guiding with one guide for every five skiers, tender transfers, transfers in Narvik and Tromsø, and the safety kit: avalanche airbag pack, transceiver, shovel and probe. Flights, drinks, meals ashore, insurance and your own ski kit and clothing are extra.

Narvik or the Lyngen Alps?

Both are eight-day ski cruises in Arctic Norway. On the Lyngen Alps trip you ski from a sailing boat, out of Tromsø; it is full for March 2027, and bookings for March 2028 are open. Narvik > Tromsø runs aboard a comfortable trawler, on dates on request in March and April.

How do I book?

Write to us by email or on WhatsApp with your dates and the number of skiers, and we’ll reply within 24 hours with a quote. The booking is confirmed with a deposit, the amount of which is shown on your quote.
