Lofoten ski touring, where the mountains drop into the sea

North of the Arctic Circle, the mountains of Norway run straight down into the sea. In the Lofoten Islands you set out from Svolvær, on the island of Austvågøy, onto summits of 600 to 1,000 m, and your last turns end at the water’s edge: that is the great joy of Lofoten ski touring. Our ski touring week in the Lofoten Islands gives you 6 to 7 days of it.

Further north, the Lyngen Alps rise to 1,800 m between the Ullsfjord and the Lyngenfjord, crowned by Jiehkkevárri (1,833 m), and the spring snow carries you down to the fjord. Around Bodø, facing the Lofoten, the routes climb to between 600 and 1,000 m, Sjunktinden (1,071 m) among them.

On board or ashore: from the Lyngen Alps to Finnmark

Three of the five trips are spent on board. For ski touring and sailing in the Lyngen Alps, a schooner chartered for your group sails from Tromsø and back, with five double cabins with shower, a chef on board and a saloon with wide windows; a zodiac sets you down at the foot of the mountains. Around Bodø, one or two large Arctic sailing ships, each taking 12 guests, carry you north of the Arctic Circle, facing the Lofoten. On the ski cruise from Narvik to Tromsø, a comfortable 28 m steel trawler carries 12 guests at most, and a RIB drops you at the foot of the peaks.

Ashore, the Lofoten trip is based in a 3-star hotel facing the sea in Svolvær, in the spirit of the rorbuer fishermen’s cabins, with a private minibus each morning. In Finnmark, Norway’s northernmost mainland county, you stay in the same lodge all week and ski straight from the door; one day by snowmobile and one day by small boat are included.

March, April, May: the light of the far north

The season runs from March to May, depending on the trip. In mid-March the Lofoten Islands already have around twelve hours of daylight, and the northern lights may appear at night. Through April and into May the days grow very long, and the light stays with you well into the evening.

The Lofoten Islands and Bodø run in March and April, the Lyngen Alps in March, and Finnmark from March to May; dates for Narvik to Tromsø are on request. For the weather forecast, see yr.no.

Evenings in the far north, on board or by the sea

Your evening depends on the trip. In the Lofoten Islands you come back to the harbour at Svolvær and a hotel facing the sea. In the Lyngen Alps the chef sets the table on board while the yacht makes for its anchorage. Between Narvik and Tromsø there is the sauna on board, then the crew’s cook takes over.

Around Bodø a hot shower waits on board, and a drying cabinet has your boots ready by morning. In Finnmark you come home each evening to the same lodge.

Ski touring in Norway: your questions

When is the best time to go ski touring in Norway?

From March to May, depending on the trip. The Lofoten Islands and Bodø run in March and April, the Lyngen Alps in March, and Finnmark from March to May; dates for Narvik to Tromsø are on request. In March the northern lights may appear at night; in April and May the days are very long.

Where can you go ski touring in northern Norway?

We ski five regions of northern Norway: the Lofoten Islands from Svolvær, the coast from Narvik to Tromsø by trawler, Finnmark from a lodge, the Lyngen Alps from Tromsø, and the mountains around Bodø, facing the Lofoten, under sail.

How much does a ski touring trip to Norway cost?

From €3,500 per person, excluding flights, for 8 days in the Lofoten Islands. The Lyngen Alps trip costs €7,500 per person for March 2028; prices for Narvik to Tromsø, Finnmark and Bodø are on request. For the Lofoten, allow around €200 to reach Oslo-Gardermoen, then around €500 for Oslo – Bodø – Svolvær, a leg we can include on request.

What level do I need for ski touring in Norway?

Technical level 3/5 for the Lofoten Islands, the Lyngen Alps and Bodø, with fitness level 3/5 in the Lofoten and around Bodø. Climbs reach +900 m in the Lofoten and +800 to +1,200 m around Bodø; in the Lyngen Alps you spend 3 to 6 hours on skins a day. For Narvik to Tromsø and Finnmark, we set the level together with you. To see where you stand: your off-piste skiing level.

Boat, hotel or lodge: how do I choose?

Choose by how you would like to spend your evenings. A ski and sail trip, in the Lyngen Alps or around Bodø, means you sleep on board and wake up on the water. The trawler from Narvik to Tromsø adds a sauna on board. The hotel in Svolvær gives you the harbour and the sea each evening; in Finnmark you come back to the same lodge all week and ski straight from the door.

Are there still places in the Lyngen Alps?

The 21–28 March 2027 departure is fully booked; March 2028 is open, at €7,500 per person excluding flights, with a €2,250 deposit. The trip runs for 8 days / 7 nights from Tromsø, on a schooner chartered for the group, 10 skiers at most in two groups of 5.

How do I get to northern Norway?

Via Oslo. For the Lofoten Islands you fly to Oslo-Gardermoen, then on to Svolvær via Bodø; the Lyngen Alps trip starts and ends in Tromsø, and the Bodø trip in Bodø. For Narvik and Finnmark, we give you the details on request. Flights are not included; Avinor publishes timetables for Norway’s airports.

How do I book?

Ask us for a quote and we’ll reply within 24 hours. We can hold a place for you while we settle the details together; the deposit depends on the trip: 30% for the Lofoten Islands, €2,250 for the Lyngen Alps, 60% for Bodø.
