Arctic Norway on skis: Finnmark, at the very top of the country

Finnmark covers the northern tip of mainland Norway, and beyond it there is only the sea. You get to know it one ski day at a time, as each ridge opens onto another wide white space, between snowfields and coast.

The light changes the colour of the snow from hour to hour, and a week on skis is the loveliest way to take it in.

One lodge, the same all week

The pleasure of a lodge week is simple: you unpack once. Each tour sets off from the lodge and comes back to it, heading in a different direction as the snow and the weather allow.

In the evening, boots drying, the next day’s tour takes shape as the light fades, and on a clear March night the northern lights may join you.

Your ski days

Finnmark skiing: a new tour every day, from the lodge door

This week is for intermediate to expert off-piste skiers in good physical shape who have already done some ski touring. Each day of ski touring in Finnmark brings up to 900 m of climbing, three to five hours of steady skinning, then the run down.

We choose the route each morning according to the weather, the snow cover and what you feel like skiing.

Snowmobile and small boat, both included

Alongside the ski touring, one day by snowmobile and one day by small boat bring a change of rhythm to the week. The snowmobile carries you across the snow at a different pace, and the boat shows you the coast from the sea.

Both are part of the stay, and we fit them into the week around the snow and the weather.

March to May, the season of light

In March the light returns quickly after the long winter darkness, and on clear, dark nights the northern lights can appear above the hills. April and May bring very long days, and a tour can stretch into the evening with daylight to spare.

Choose the month that appeals to you most, and we’ll help you pick the week.

The programme

Your week in Arctic Norway, day by day

  1. Day 1

Flight to the arrival airport, which we confirm with you. Transfer and check-in at the lodge. If the group arrives in time, a short first outing on skis to check the kit. Dinner.

  2. Day 2

After breakfast, your first day of ski touring from the lodge, on a route chosen that morning for the weather, the snow cover and what you feel like skiing.

  3. Days 3 to 7

Five days of ski touring, heading out in a different direction from the lodge. Within the week, depending on the snow and the weather, one day by snowmobile and one day by small boat.

  4. Day 8

Transfer to the airport and flight home.

The programme may change with the snow, the weather, the level of the group and your wishes, for everyone’s safety and enjoyment; the guide has the final word.
