Why choosing Val d'Isère and Espace Killy for skiing?

Dernière mise à jour : 17 août 2020

Nestled at the edge of the Tarentaise valley, bordering with Maurienne, Valle d'Aosta and Piedmont, Val d'isère, and Tignes form Espace Killy. It is a very high place of skiing, in all its forms of practice. It has hosted the biggest competitions, from the Olympic Games to the World Ski Championships, via a stage of the World Cup, each year.

This sporting resort is not lacking in assets, small levels are there to celebrate with tens of kilometers of green and blue slopes at the top of the mountains, whose particular shape of large hilly plateaus offers them a grandiose playground and a fantastic view.

Experts also find their account there, the sloping parts being located from high plateaus to the bottom of the valleys. Mythical tracks such as the Olympic Downhill run from the Face de Bellevarde or the Oreiller-Killy and Rhône-Alpes World Cup tracks will give speed skiers, curves and thrills to fans of committed piste skiing.

It is above all without doubt the resort offering the most beautiful, the largest and the most accessible off-piste ski area in the Alps.

People from all over the world, even Swiss and Austrians, travel here to practice freeride and ski touring in this exceptional setting.

Heliskiing is also practiced there, on the spot in helicopter recovery and in the close Italy by drop offs. Valgrisenche, the most beautiful spot in the Alps for this practice is located just on the other side of the mountain, close at hand.

The numerous virgin and wild valleys of the Vanoise National Park unroll their white carpet at your feet, on all the exhibitions. You just have to bend down. To the delight of Freeriders and Ski Hikers.

Why here more than elsewhere? The explanation is simple: built on private funds, Val d'Isère was behind in the 60s, in the development of its domain on the other big resorts of the Tarentaise, built thanks to public subsidies. The creation of the Vanoise National Park then blocked the extension of the ski resorts.

Bad luck for Val d'Isère, which had the best development potential in the valley, which already has the largest ski areas in the world ? Not sure, today its reputation is etched in stone precisely because its natural space is as much preserved as accessible.

However, the performance, speed and modernity of the ski lifts is simply unrivaled in France. We only exceptionally queue there.

Its dominant position in the valley means that on skis you can go to La Plagne, Les Arcs or Maurienne for the day. On skis.

Convinced ?
