SKIING IN SVALBARD:
Discovering the island of Spitzbergen
Lying deep within the Arctic Ocean between Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is a vast, frozen archipelago where mountains, glaciers, and sea merge into a single breathtaking wilderness. Its rugged landscape, sculpted by centuries of wind and ice, offers an unparalleled playground for ski touring and exploration. Gentle peaks rise from immense glaciers, their slopes tumbling down to the sea, while the shifting Arctic light transforms every horizon into something new. Here, silence reigns — broken only by the crack of ice and the distant call of seabirds. Polar bears roam the coastlines, and the air carries the scent of salt and snow. Remote, untouched, and infinitely wild, Svalbard is a place where ski-sailing adventure becomes elemental — a land for those who seek purity, freedom, and the quiet grandeur of the High North.
Aboard the Noorderlicht, our ski-sailing expedition offers total immersion in Svalbard’s untamed beauty. From the towering glaciers of Isfjorden to the wild slopes of Prins Karls Forland and the far northern peaks around Ny-Ålesund, each day unfolds as a new chapter of Arctic exploration. Guided by experienced mountain professionals, you’ll skin across vast snowfields, summit ridgelines above frozen fjords, and carve turns down to the water’s edge beneath the endless light of the midnight sun. Between adventures, the schooner becomes your warm and welcoming refuge — a place to share stories, meals, and quiet moments while the ice drifts silently past. This is more than a journey; it’s a rare harmony of sea and mountain, ski touring, motion and stillness, discovery and awe at the very top of the world.

SKI TOURING AND SAILING IN SVALBARD
TRIP TO SPITZBERGEN FROM LONGYEARBYEN TO NY-ÅLESUND
Our Arctic Ski & Sail Expedition in Svalbard unfolds over 8 days and 7 nights aboard the Noorderlicht, an authentic two-masted schooner designed for polar adventure. Departing from Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town, the journey follows a spectacular route through the heart of the archipelago — sailing across Isfjorden, ski touring the wild glaciers of St. Jonsfjorden, and continuing north toward the legendary scientific outpost of Ny-Ålesund in Kings Bay, which is the furthest north permanent human community in the world.
Figure yourself arriving in this unique town by backcountry skiing...
Each day reveals a new anchorage and a fresh mountain to ski: gentle peaks overlooking frozen fjords, vast glaciers descending into the sea, and untouched slopes bathed in the soft glow of the midnight sun. Guided by seasoned mountain professionals, you’ll skin from shore to summit and carve your tracks down to the water’s edge, surrounded by the raw stillness of the High Arctic. Evenings aboard the Noorderlicht bring warmth, shared stories, and the quiet rhythm of the ship drifting between ice and light — an expedition where every horizon and ski runs feels like the edge of the world.
To explore the untouched wilderness of Spitzbergen, our Svalbard Ski & Sail expedition combines ski touring, and the timeless rhythm of life at sea. Each morning, the Noorderlicht anchors in a new fjord, giving access to slopes that can only be reached by boat — wild, remote, and infinitely varied. With climbing skins, we set out to ascend gentle Arctic peaks or vast glacial plateaus, where silence reigns and the only tracks in sight are our own. The snow here, shaped by polar winds and sea air, offers a unique mix of light powder and smooth spring conditions, perfect for long, flowing backcountry skiing descents down to the frozen shoreline.
Depending on the day’s weather and sea ice, we’ll ski hidden valleys, broad glaciers, and the dramatic ridgelines overlooking Isfjorden, St. Jonsfjorden, or the wild northern reaches near Ny-Ålesund. Every run feels like a small expedition — skis gliding where few have ever gone before, with the schooner waiting below like a floating basecamp. This blend of ski touring and sailing is designed for seasoned backcountry skiers in good physical shape, seeking both challenge and serenity in one of the most remote and awe-inspiring places on Earth.
